The Vermont Yankee nuclear plant, which received its operating license in 1972, will be closed by the end of 2014. The plant's owner blamed a variety of factors for its decision, including a boom in US natural gas production that has driven down natural gas and wholesale energy prices, making nuclear power less economical.
