Competitive fitness options on the Cape

It may be beach season — time to relax and indulge in fried seafood and frozen treats — but there are plenty of fitness events to participate in while vacationing on the Cape.

If you’re on the Cape for the Fourth of July weekend, there is the 40th Annual Wellfleet 5-Mile Road Race and Kids Fun Run on July 6 .

The race course begins at the Mayo Beach parking lot, runs along Wellfleet Harbor to Sunset Hill and back. Registration is open until July 4.

Later in the month is the 37th Annual Dennis 5-Mile Road Race and 3-Mile Walk.

The July 26 race and walk will start at Wixon Middle School. Registration is available until the day before the race.

July 12 is the Falmouth Triathlon. It’s a sprint distance race, with a -mile swim in Nantucket Sound, a 9-mile bike ride along the Falmouth Road Race course, and a 3.1-mile run along Surf Drive and onto the bike path toward Woods Hole.

Regular registration is sold out, but there are a number of charity spots still available.

It’s not too late to register for the Swim, Kayak, Walk or Run Against the Tide in Brewster on Aug. 16.

The event, a fund-raiser for the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition, is like a choose-your-own-adventure race. Participants can pick up to four events: a 1-mile swim; 2-mile kayak; 3-mile walk; 5k run; or a 10k run. And within those events, athletes can choose to participate in either a recreational or competitive category.
