Allan Piper, a New York filmmaker who is proud to call himself a Massachusetts guy (his mom still lives in Newton), will debut his documentary, “Married and Counting,” at the Rhode Island International Film Festival on Saturday. The film follows a gay couple that decides to celebrate their 25th anniversary by getting married in every state that will let them. It’s narrated by former “Star Trek” actor and same-sex marriage advocate George Takei. Piper told us that he’s thrilled that the film will have its first showing in Rhode Island, where the debate about gay marriage continues. “I’d like to think that this film could be a positive part of the discussion,” he said. Piper notes that his subjects celebrated their first wedding anniversary on Aug. 7, which happened to be the opening night of the RIIF. Of course, that was just one of the couple’s anniversaries. They’ve been married several times. “They have a lot of anniversaries to keep track of now,” Piper said.
