Sports Illustrated skewers the Red Sox

It took a while, but the editors at Sports Illustrated finally realized that the 2012 Red Sox are a train wreck. In this week’s cover story, Tom Verducci calls this year’s sad sack squad “one of the most loathsome teams ever foisted upon fans of the Red Sox,” and dubs Bobby Valentine “Captain Queeg.” (The eccentric Queeg is the central character in Herman Wouk’s novel “The Caine Mutiny.”) Of Bobby V, Sox owner John Henry says: “He’s brilliant but not someone who’s going to be liked by everyone. Popularity is overrated, but he’s had a tough go this year.” And so have fans.
