The days of legendary Kennedy touch football games are long gone, replaced by more sedate Kennedy golf tournaments, like the 23d annual Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights tournament held Friday at the Hyannisport Club. One thing the day proved is that the Kennedys can still draw the big names.
Ethel Kennedy, the 84-year-old widow of Robert, was there, and her foursome included filmmaker Bobby Farrelly, Steny Hoyer, a Democratic congressman from Maryland, and TV actor Matt McCoy, who has appeared on “Revenge,” “The Mentalist,” “The Closer,” and, of course, “The West Wing.”
Those names not big enough for you? Also swinging the sticks were “24” actor Dennis Haysbert, actor Trevor Donovan, Celtics legend John Havlicek, former Red Sox ace and now dentist Jim Lonborg, Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers, and former American decathlete Rafer Johnson. Because Ethel and Robert had 11 kids, naturally there were plenty of Kennedys on hand as well. Joe Kennedy was not playing golf, but was around Thursday night with his arm in a sling for the pre-tournament dinner, as was Teddy Kennedy Jr., Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Christopher Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, and a gaggle of grandchildren.
Ethel may be the busiest of all the Kennedys these days, thanks to the HBO film her daughter Rory has produced about her life.
