Jane Pauley, former cohost of NBC's "Today" and "Dateline," visited the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum on Thursday as the guest speaker for the Bessie Tartt Wilson Initiative for Children 's 10th anniversary gala. Pauley, who has talked about her battle with bipolar disorder, praised the initiative, which aims to research and improve early childhood education, for its accomplishments over the last decade. She related its efforts to her own work on the leadership board of the McGovern Institute at MIT, which researches brain development. Pauley also recalled her first meeting with the initiative's founder and president, Mary L. Reed, when she profiled Reed for a "Your Life Calling" segment on "Today." Gail Kirk is chair of the initiative; her husband, Paul (former US senator), was the night's emcee, and touched on the need for local businesses to invest in early education.
