Spaceman spotted at benefit for WBCN documentary

Former Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee had a ball at this week’s fund-raiser for the WBCN documentary “The American Revolution.” The Spaceman said he drove the 226 miles from his home in Vermont to support Bill Lichtenstein ’s film and also to see his old friend, former ’BCN DJ Charles Laquidara , who flew in from Hawaii for the show. “Me and Chuck go way back,” Lee told us. “I love that guy.” He also enjoyed the evening’s entertainment, which included performances by Al Kooper , Jonathan Edwards , Billy Squier , Willie “Loco” Alexander , James Montgomery , and former Boston members Barry Goudreau and Sib Hashian , whose medley of songs from the band’s record-breaking first LP had Lee playing some serious air guitar in the crowd. “[ Dennis Eckersley ] and I used to smoke with those guys in the runway at Fenway Park,” Lee said. (Since he was in a mood to chat, we asked if the 66-year-old lefty likes the Mike Napoli signing. In a word: No!) Aside from the many luminaries onstage, there were a few familiar faces in the crowd, including promoter Don Law, arts patron Ted Cutler, who was with girlfriend, former ’BCN DJ Carolyn Fox, WBCN founder Ray Riepen, “Here & Now” host Robin Young, WXRT’s Norm Winer, Phoenix Media’s David Bieber, venture capitalist Mitchell Kertzman, and CBS Radio marketing man Chachi Loprete and his wife, Stephanie.

Comments

I received a comment from Sam Kopper the current Program Director at WBCN Free Form Rock.  That's right, even with all of the under reporting by the Globe and other Boston media WBCN is very much alive and continues to blaze new trails.  Mr. Kopper has some real valid concerns with the coverage of the December 3 event at the House of Blues.  The media has ignored the full story, his comments are:
 "
I have held my tongue long enough regarding coverage of   the efforts and events surrounding this film, but THIS piece goes too far in regards to what it leaves out! WHO is supplying The Globe with info & NOT reporting the complete story. WRONG "fact" - My friend Mitch Kertzman was NOT at the HOB event. He WAS at the Sunday night party for early BCN crew. I, as first program director of WBCN as a Rock station hired MANY of the people mentioned in this piece including Norm Winer, Charles Laquidara, AND Mitch K (as well as Maxanne Sartori, Andy Beaubien); and yet, The Globe fails to mention "my" LIVE BROADCAST of the event, originating from a BIG GREEN bus (HOW could you miss it?) right in front of the HOB, and airing on 100.7 HD3 and on line at wbcn.com.   “My” because it is I presently heading up the effort to preserve great human handcrafted radio for the FUTURE. That you didn't mention me, the first PD, who is currently running WBCN Free Form Rock (and having hired Carolyn Fox as one of our CURRENT DJs) is a small personal affront to me; I don't give a rodent's hindquarters about that. I do CARE that NONE of this cute "society page" reporting acknowledges the work and dedication that the   many fans and the few employees (yes, me included) are putting into the 21st Century BCN!! Who the hell is your source? What sort of "digging" do your reporters do? Fawn over the past and ignore the present and future. Cute. Inane. "
