A new J.D. Salinger film and biography are being billed as an unprecedented look into the mysterious life of the author of ‘‘The Catcher in the Rye.’’ Simon & Schuster announced Tuesday that it had acquired ‘‘The Private War of J.D. Salinger,’’ an oral biography compiled by author David Shields and filmmaker-screenwriter Shane Salerno, whose screenplay credits include the Oliver Stone film ‘‘Savages.’’ Salerno has been working for several years on his documentary, which PBS will air next January for the 200th of its ‘‘American Masters’’ series. Salinger’s longtime literary agent, Phyllis Westberg of Harold Ober Associates Inc., declined comment Tuesday. Virtually nothing new has been learned about Salinger since he died in New Hampshire in 2010 at age 91. No authorized biography has appeared.
Chris Cuomo leaving ABC News for CNN
Chris Cuomo is leaving ABC News to host a new morning show at CNN, where new boss Jeff Zucker is moving fast to try to turn around the cable news pioneer that has fallen on hard times. Network managing editor Mark Whitaker announced he was quitting Tuesday, officially Zucker’s seventh day on the job as CNN Worldwide president. Longtime political consultants and commentators James Carville and Mary Matalin also are leaving. Cuomo is expected to be paired with current evening anchor Erin Burnett in the mornings. CNN said Tuesday it was discussing other job options with Soledad O’Brien, who will be ending her second stint as morning show cohost. Cuomo, the ‘‘20/20’’ coanchor, is the second big defection from ABC to CNN in a little more than a month, the other being Jake Tapper.
Weaver and Hyde Pierce take their act to Broadway
Sigourney Weaver and David Hyde Pierce will reprise their onstage sibling rivalry when they take Christopher Durang’s ‘‘Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike’’ to Broadway. Producers said Tuesday that the play, which takes characters and themes from Chekhov and sets them in present day Pennsylvania, will make the leap from Lincoln Center’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater to Broadway’s Golden Theatre for 17 weeks starting March 5. Weaver, whose Broadway credits include ‘‘Hurlyburly’’ in 1984, is working on the USA series ‘‘Political Animals.’’ Her notable film credits include ‘‘Alien,’’ “Avatar,’’ and “Working Girl.’’ Pierce has spent a lot of time on stage since the end of his sitcom ‘‘Frasier,’’ including Broadway stints in ‘‘Spamalot,’’ “Curtains,’’ “Accent on Youth,’’ and ‘‘La Bete.’’
