‘Witness Uganda’ will premiere at ART

“Witness Uganda,” a musical by Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews that won the 2012 Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theater, will have its world premiere in Cambridge next year. The American Repertory Theater will host the show at the Loeb Drama Center, directed by ART artistic director Diane Paulus, who helmed recent revivals of “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess” and “Pippin,” both of which went on to Broadway. “Witness Uganda,” inspired by a true story, is described by the ART as the tale of “Griffin, a black American volunteer, [who] escapes New York City from his church’s probing into his sexuality and travels to Uganda on a whim to help build a village school. But when he falls into a complicated relationship with a group of destitute, orphaned teenagers, he becomes obsessed with a mission that will change his and their lives forever.” Sounds like a different trip to Uganda than we see in “The Book of Mormon.”
