Everyone, it seems, is paying attention to the trial of alleged gangster Whitey Bulger — even the movie stars in our midst. The Globe’s Shelley Murphy is covering the trial and reports that Robert Duvall inquired Thursday about getting a seat in the courtroom. Immediately, there was speculation that the celebrated actor whose credits include an Academy Award for the 1983 film “Tender Mercies” might be doing research to play Whitey in a future film. Not so fast. Although Duvall and Bulger are about the same age — the actor is 82, the alleged crime boss is 83 — it could be that Duvall just wants to observe US District Judge Denise Casper, who is presiding at the trial. Why? Duvall is in town shooting a film called “The Judge,” and he’s the judge. But, yes, we do think Duvall looks a little like Whitey and probably could do him, um, justice on the big screen.
