2-year-old colt given the name Boston Strong

In early April, Matt Gatsas, president of Sovereign Stable in Manchester, N.H., bought a 2-year-old colt at auction. It was a handsome horse, but it didn’t have a name. Days later, after the Boston Marathon bombings, the slogan “Boston Strong” was born and Gatsas got an idea. Checking the Jockey Club database, he discovered that Boston Strong was available as a name, and his application was quickly approved. Gatsas, a native New Englander, made a $1,000 donation to the One Fund and also pledged to donate 5 percent of any of the horse’s on-track earnings to the fund. We’re told the colt is being prepped by trainer John Terranova II and could make his first start this summer at Saratoga.
