Local children’s author Jack Gantos (left), who won a Newbery Medal in 2012 for “Dead End in Norvelt,” was one of the high-profile speakers at the Simmons College Children’s Literature Summer Institute, which drew students, writers, readers, and Simmons personalities to Boston. The three-day event also included discussions with “The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing” author M. T. Anderson, “Why We Broke Up” illustrator Maira Kalman, Lemony Snicket’s editor Susan Rich (a Simmons Center for the Study of Children’s Literature graduate), and Cambridge’s Lois Lowry, whose classic “The Giver” is about to become a movie starring Jeff Bridges.
