Richard Dyer, former classical music critic for the Globe and two-time winner of the ASCAP/Deems Taylor Award for distinguished music criticism, is now adding beauty pageant judge to his already impressive resume. Dyer has been selected to serve as a judge for the 2014 Miss America Preliminary Competition at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall. He joins six other judges Sept. 10-12 to evaluate the 53 contestants in this year’s pageant. Another panel will judge the final competition, which airs on ABC Sept. 15. A former Briggs-Copeland lecturer at Harvard, Dyer has been sought out to serve on panels and juries before, including the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Joining Dyer will be Stephanie George, former president of In Style, Real Simple, and Essence magazines; Emmy-winning hairstylist Oscar James; and Karl Jurman, musical
director and conductor of Broadway’s “The Lion King.”
