Sox fan Allan Munroe, 87, yells out “Play Ball” at Fenway on Saturday.

There are diehard Red Sox fans and then there’s Allan Munroe. Saturday, the 87-year-old from Florida paid his first visit to Fenway Park in 50 years thanks to the efforts of his family, dozens of complete strangers, and Linda Pizzuti Henry, the wife of Sox owner John Henry. A lifelong fan of the Olde Towne Team, Munroe had spent the past several years caring for his wife of six decades, Norma. When she died of lung cancer in May, her granddaughter, Angela McKinnon, resolved to finally get grandpa to Fenway. She
created a GoFundMe page called “ShipGpaUpToBoston” — a riff on the Dropkick Murphys anthem “I’m Shipping Up To Boston” — and that caught the eye of Pizzuti Henry, who promptly e-mailed McKinnon. “Your grandfather sounds like an incredible man. Best of luck with your trip,’’ she wrote. “I will happily provide game tickets, lunch at the game, and a private tour of the ballpark. Let me know the number of tickets needed.” And so Munroe was in the ballpark on a postcard-perfect Saturday afternoon to see Jon Lester and his beloved BoSox beat the hated Yankees. Not bad.
