Ned Johnson ID’d as buyer of 1776 painting

Fidelity Investments chairman Ned Johnson isn’t commenting on a report in The Art Newspaper that he’s the buyer of a giant 18th-century altarpiece sold by a church in London. The paper reports that Johnson paid $2.85 million for the Benjamin West piece, titled “Devout Men Taking Away the Body of St. Stephen ” (1776). The plan, according to the publication, is for the enormous painting to go on long-term loan or be donated to the Museum of Fine Arts in its Art of the Americas wing. Neither Johnson nor the MFA is talking.
