Maine native Patrick Dempsey returned to Vacationland this weekend to host his annual bicycling, running, walking fund-raiser for the cancer center that bears the actor’s name. Nearly 4,000 people took part in the Dempsey Challenge, raising $1.1 million for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer, Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, a former mill town on the Androscoggin River. More than 1,100 cyclists rode routes ranging from 10 to 100 miles on Sunday, with Dempsey making an appearance during the event’s closing ceremony. A native of Buckfield, Dempsey plays Dr. Derek Shepherd on ‘‘Grey’s Anatomy.’’ He launched the Dempsey Challenge after his mother’s experience with cancer, and he founded the Dempsey Center in 2008. . . . Meanwhile, former Olympic soccer star and onetime Boston Breaker Kristine Lilly took part in a soccer clinic in Yarmouth the other day. The event, sponsored by Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod, also featured the fancy footwork of Breakers players Kate Schoepfer, Alyssa Naeher, and Maddy Evans.
