‘Bad Grandpa’ wins the weekend box office

Paramount’s hidden-camera comedy ‘‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa,’’ starring Johnny Knoxville as an accident-prone grandfather, topped the weekend box office with $32 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Warner Bros. ‘‘Gravity,’’ which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts on a troubled spacecraft, fell to second place, adding $20.3 million to its haul over the weekend. It had held the top spot since debuting three weeks ago. Sony’s high-seas thriller ‘‘Captain Phillips,’’ starring Tom Hanks, held on to third place with $11.8 million. Fox’s gritty drama ‘‘The Counselor,’’ starring Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, and Michael Fassbender, opened in fourth place. Fox Searchlight’s ‘‘12 Years a Slave’’ played in only 123 theaters but edged into the top 10. Estimated ticket sales are for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. (AP)
