How to explain the popularity of a new Korean language course being offered for the first time at Brandeis? Simple: Psy. The South Korean rapper whose song “Gangnam Style” was an enormous hit (and viral video) is believed to be the reason the new class, Korean 10A, exceeded enrollment in just a few hours. Most of the 18 students who signed up for the class don’t have Korean roots, but do have interest in K-pop music. “Psy did increase my curiosity about the Korean language,” junior Sara Brande told the website BrandeisNow. “I knew Psy was a really famous comedian so I wanted to learn Korean to understand his jokes.” Ku Jung, a Brandeis senior who helped create Korean 10A, said, “The demand for the Korean course has been simply astounding.”Mark Shanahan can be reached at email@example.com.
