David Ortiz to produce a show for MTV

Big Papi on the small screen? Apparently so. Red Sox slugger David Ortiz and Pirates All-Star outfielder Andrew McCutchen are partnering with MTV and Major League Baseball to produce a weekly series combining baseball and pop culture. The untitled 30-episode series would air on MTV2 and be shot at the MLB Fan Cave, a space in Manhattan that has interactive elements for fans and occasional concerts. The show, according to a press release, would go “beyond game analysis, stats, and highlights to showcase MLB athletes off the field, spotlighting the stars’s personalities and passions through a series of player interviews and features, in addition to celebrity appearances.” One of Papi’s duties as a producer of the show will be to get other players to participate. “Players want to be musicians and musicians want to be players,’’ he said in a statement. ‘‘So it’s going to be pretty easy to get my friends in baseball to have fun on MTV.’’ Stephen Friedman, MTV’s president, said it’s well documented that fans are interested in athletes’ lives away from the field. As an example, he cited MTV’s series “Cribs,” which often featured multimillionaire sports stars taking viewers on a guided tour of their McMansions. ‘‘We’re always looking for ways to connect our audience with the stars they revere and want a closer connection to,” said Friedman.
