When we heard that those crazy Harvard cross-dressers known as the Hasty Pudding Theatricals will be honoring Dame Helen Mirren with their 2014 Woman of the Year Award, our first reaction was, “It’s about time.” How is it even possible that the Hastys haven’t feted the Oscar-winning actress before now? Clearly, Mirren is OK with being overlooked for so long. “How very saucy of the Hasty Pudding organisation to offer me their award,” the 68-year-old Brit said in a statement. “As someone who adores Pudding in all its manifestations — Suet, Christmas, Treacle, Bread and Butter, Yorkshire, Plum, Figgy, etc., etc. — I am so looking forward to the famous Hasty Pudding.” Perfect. Mirren, who’s first memorable film role was in the 1969 feature, “Age of Consent,” earned her first Oscar nomination for “The Madness of King George,” her second for her performance in Robert Altman’s “Gosford Park,” and she finally won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen.” Previous Hasty Pudding winners include Catherine Zeta-Jones, Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway, Claire Danes, and, last year, Marion Cotillard. The Woman of the Year festivities will be held Jan. 30, with Mirren leading the annual parade through Harvard Square.
