‘The Giver’ gets a trailer

We understand that everyone’s excited about “Divergent,” but we’re a bit more revved up about another dystopian young-adult book-turned film, “The Giver,” which had its big trailer release on Wednesday. Based on the 90-second clip, the movie — which is based on local author Lois Lowry’s 1993 novel — will feature plenty of creepy scenes with Meryl Streep, some quality time with Jeff Bridges as the Giver, and a strong showing by Brenton Thwaites as the story’s hero, Jonas. For those who don’t know, Lowry’s Newbery Medal-winning book is about a so-called utopian society that forbids free will and promotes “sameness.” It’s sort of like Veronica Roth’s 2011 novel, “Divergent” — but it came out 18 years earlier. We’re also rooting for “The Giver” because it comes from local company Walden Media.
