‘Black Mass’ shoots in Chelsea

Jay Connor

Johnny Depp, playing Whitey Bulger, and Rory Cochrane, playing Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi, drove a Malibu Classic along Essex and Shawmut streets in Chelsea Wednesday during shooting of “Black Mass.”

If you were anywhere in the vicinity of Essex Street in Chelsea Wednesday, you may have noticed the movie crew. Or maybe you just saw the Malibu Classic repeatedly driving down Essex and turning right onto Shawmut. That was the cast and crew of “Black Mass” shooting the movie about Whitey Bulger. The South Boston mobster is being played by Johnny Depp, and in the scene shot Wednesday, Bulger and tough guys Stephen Flemmi, Tommy King, and Buddy Leonard — played by Rory Cochrane, Scott Anderson, and Owen Burke, respectively — are driving around and get pulled over by a Boston cop with a warning from mafia boss Jerry Angiulo. Director Scott Cooper was expected to shoot night scenes Wednesday night on Winnisimmet Street in Chelsea.
