Grammy-winner Sam Smith, actor-musician Donald Glover, and actress Busy Philipps were among the names at a private dinner celebrating Tom McCarthy, director of the local film “Spotlight,” at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. The pre-Oscars celebration, hosted by Vanity Fair and Barneys, also drew the film’s stars, including Liev Schreiber; Oscar-nominated actress Rachel McAdams, who brought her makeup artist sister Kayleen; and Mark Ruffalo, who brought his wife, Sunrise Coigney.

“Spotlight,” which tells the story of The Boston Globe’s investigation of the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal, is up for best picture at Sunday’s Academy Awards. McCarthy is up for best director and best screenplay with co-writer Josh Singer.
