‘Heroes in Health Care’ recognized at annual gala

More than 200 elegantly attired guests attended the Visiting Nurse Association of Boston’s 12th annual “Heroes in Health Care” benefit gala at the Mandarin Oriental hotel downtown Saturday night. Dusty Majumdar, vice president of IBM Watson Health, Dr. Pierantonio Russo of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, and Richard Rakowski, CEO of The Medically Home Group, were honored. Guests included VNA president and CEO Mary Ann O’Connor, WBZ-TV medical reporter Dr. Mallika Marshall, gala co-chairs Linda Hope-Springer and Loriann Meagher, gala committee chairs Renee Picard Walsh and Debra Angeloni, gala committee members Ron and Shawnda Walker, and Mutual of America president and CEO John Greed. The “Heroes in Health Care” event raised $275,000 to benefit the Maternal Child Health Program and Charitable Care Fund of the VNA of Boston, according to organizers.

Also Saturday night, the Pan-Mass Challenge presented a record $51 million gift to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at a celebratory gathering attended by many boldfacers including Dr. Laurie Glimcher, president and CEO of Dana-Farber, Larry Lucchino, former Red Sox president and CEO, Josh Bekenstein, chairman of the board at Dana-Farber, and Rob DeMartini, CEO of New Balance. This year’s Pan-Mass. Challenge was Aug. 5 and 6, when more than 6,200 cyclists raised money by riding routes that ranged from 25 miles to 192 miles.
