In 1936, US Olympian Jesse Owens won the second of his four gold medals at the Berlin Games in the long jump over German Luz Long, who was the first to congratulate him.

In 1944, diarist Anne Frank, 15, was arrested with her sister, parents, and four others by the Gestapo after hiding for two years in Amsterdam. (Anne died in 1945 at Bergen-Belsen.)
