The instrument, selected during a scouting trip to Hamburg, replaces the 27-year-old piano that was used for decades in the Gardner’s Tapestry Room. A piano the caliber of instruments in the world’s elite symphony halls, the new Steinway cost $184,000, paid for by longtime Gardner supporter Brit d’Arbeloff. And it marks another step in the Gardner’s path to securing a role as one of the city’s leading venues for classical music.
