What inspires your furniture design?

I think a common factor is that I incorporate textiles and embroidery and a lot of fun colors into the pieces. I always come back to merging more industrial processes with the more domestic quality of textiles.

Do you see parallels between your furniture and fashion?

Definitely. One of the last groups of furniture I presented in New York [at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair] was entirely based on pleated fabrics that were produced by the same man who does the pleating for Chanel.

When you were at ICFF, were you concerned about presenting yourself in a way that represented the furniture you make?

I have to think about being a part of the whole impression of my work, so I did take a little bit more time and care in considering how I look alongside the furniture because I’m standing with it. I’m actually part of the package. I tend to wear bright colors or different combinations of colors. I’m not a huge pattern person.  — C.M.
