Can you size up people’s taste in real estate by what they’re wearing?
One hundred percent. Part of my process is to study personal aesthetics — clothing, furniture, art. With couples, there’s often a juxtaposition of taste, which can be really interesting.
Does your home look like one of your outfits?
Yes. My house is based on classic forms but with twists of the unexpected, like a French settee upholstered with a contemporary fabric. That sums up the way I dress, too.
Until recently you were a corporate lawyer. Did you burn your pantyhose when you left the law firm?

I didn’t wear pantyhose. I didn’t even wear suits. I’m true to myself.
What’s the last thing you bought?
A tennis dress, but I don’t play tennis. It’s aspirational. I want to learn. I figure if I have the outfit, it’s the first step.
Speaking of tennis, do you shop with a purpose or for sport?
I shop stores with edited collections and wait for what catches my eye. That said, I always go for quality. I hope my pieces will be hand-me-downs for future daughters-in-law.
Anything you don’t wear?
Neon. It doesn’t look good on anyone. — Marni Elyse Katz
