Trendspotting

From peplum silhouettes to baroque patterned fabrics and leather trim, five new ideas that stores are embracing this season.

IT’S A MASH-UP

Color- and pattern-blocking, executed within an outfit or even in a single piece, is everywhere. Kaitlyn Litchfield, a buyer at Ports & Company in Cohasset, notes that while “color-blocking has been around forever--think back to the mod ’60s--the mash-up is the invention of current-day designers adding their own twist.”

QUITE A CONTRAST

On the heels of accessory-overload, the contrast collar adds interest without the jangle. Aimee Lombardi of French + Italian in Marblehead loves how this new, unique feature “frames the face in a minimal yet elegant way.” A boldly colored collar eliminates the need for a necklace.

OLD-WORLD BAROQUE

RELAIS SWEATER: KRISTIN JORDAN PHOTOGRAPHY; KOBO DRESS: PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINDA

The dramatic swirls of baroque-patterned fabrics harken back to 17th-century Rome, but Amy Finegold, owner of Dresscode in Andover, notes that today’s incarnations are steeped in technology. “We’ve seen so many prints--florals, leopard, etc.--but these digitally produced patterns are quite novel.”

Nordstrom fashion director Gregg Andrews notes, “Contrast colors and innovative fabrics add interest to bold shapes.” This is certainly the case with leather. Instead of full-on looks, leather may edge a blousy top or be used as sleeves.

PRETTY AS A PEPLUM

Alternative: The Pretty Peplum

The peplum, a short flounce of an overskirt, harkens back to feminine suiting of the 1940s. “It’s an extremely flattering cut,” says Rebecca Penner, co-owner of Crush on Beacon Hill, as it accentuates a woman’s natural waistline.” This season it’s seen on structured tops, jackets, sweaters, and dresses.
