My Instagram: Rachel Murray

“Lately, I’ve been stuck on peplum tops because they are flattering and modest, yet show off a great figure,” says Murray.

If we spot someone on Instagram posting selfies while wearing sequins, ruffles, and leather, then that individual is going to end up in this column. When we spied Rachel Murray ( through our monocle wearing these extravagances, we needed to know more. Thankfully she’s just as lovely as her ensembles. Murray, 24, a Michigan native, works as a program coordinator at Harvard’s Center for Latin American Studies. She enjoys being one of the only women in the weight room at her local gymnasium, blogging, booze, and all things glamorous. Say hello to our latest Instagram find.

Q. Given that your job is centered on Mexican and Latin American studies, who are your favorite designers from that part of the planet?

A. I know Mexico best of all, and more specifically, Mexico City. With that in mind I’d say Michelle Torres, Kris Goyri, and David Salomon are my favorite Mexican designers. Torres has very glamorous pieces, and she’s know for her retro-twists. Goyri really understands the female body, everything flatters perfectly. Salomon makes stunning and feminine pieces. I would love to slip into one of his sequined dresses.

Q. You can take the girl out of Michigan, but you can’t take the Michigan out of the girl? What aspects of your Midwestern mannerisms and style have you been unable to part with?

A.The Mitten [the shape of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan] is such a great place. I’m often asked where I’m from, and it’s typically after I’ve said just a few words. I’d like to think it’s because I’m friendlier than the average Bostonian, but apparently it’s just my vowels throwing people off. A lot of my cold-weather layering has transferred nicely to this equally chilly state. I did, however, need to invest in some cute shoes for my commute, because wearing heels over the cobblestones is just too risky.

Q. Channing Tatum, Hugh Jackman, or Sexiest Man Alive Adam Levine? You must pick one.

A. This question is way too easy. Hands down, I would pick Wolverine, I mean Hugh Jackman. Seriously, who doesn’t love that beastly lumberjack with his wild haircut?! I’m secretly counting down the days until the “X-Men” sequel is released.

Q. Does your love of being one of the only women in the weight room have anything to do with, oh, I don’t know, all the male attention you undoubtedly receive?

A. This question makes me laugh. I actually hate getting hit on in the gym. Or hit on at all. When I’m at the gym, my main goal is fitness and performing better than last week. Since I’m engaged, I’m honestly not looking for any male attention, unless it’s a trainer with a killer new exercise. I do, however, enjoy demonstrating that men aren’t the only ones who can do full push-ups.

Q. It’s Friday night, you’re about to head out for a cocktail, what are you wearing?

A. I wear skinny jeans and heels almost every time I am out at night. Lately, I’ve been stuck on peplum tops because they are flattering and modest, yet show off a great figure. Even my leather jacket has a slight peplum ruffle. Regardless of my outfit, I almost always have on a statement necklace paired with some bold lips. These last two accessories really complete the look.

Q. Most recent splurge?

A. I just purchased a pair of pink suede Juicy Couture pumps. I’m probably more excited for these heels than I should be, but they’re Juicy and they’re pink, so can you really blame me?
