Ride backcountry trails with grand vistas of the cloud forest, waterfalls, and more Monteverde scenery. The proprieter’s husband grows his own coffee, and if you ask, he might provide you with a custom roast. Three-hour tour $50.

La Colina Lodge

A cozy hideaway from the bustle of Santa Elena, the Monteverde area’s tourist hub. Private rooms have their own bathrooms. The innkeeper is chatty and very helpful with arranging excursions. Breakfast is included. Room with a private bath runs $38 Sept.-Nov. $45 Dec.-Aug.
