Tackling 22 miles of the New Zealand Cycle Trail
Heights, mud, dropoffs, bridges — and out before dark!
To avoid panicking, I focused on maintaining my balance and freeing my legs, which had disappeared up to my knees in mud. I gripped my mountain bike’s handlebars and fiercely tugged as the bike’s rear wheel slipped toward an abrupt edge beyond which there was a 200-foot drop to the meandering Mangapurua Stream. A limestone cliff, called Battleship Bluff, loomed overhead.
