COLEBROOK, Conn. — To say that Rock Hall is a bed-and-breakfast is like saying the Prudential Tower is an A-frame.

What B and B for example, has its own nine-seat movie theater, complete with popcorn machine and candy?

What other B and B is a mansion designed by the legendary Palm Beach society architect Addison Mizner, the only surviving Mizner residence, by the way, north of the Mason-Dixon line and on the National Register of Historic Places?

What other B and B has 23 acres of specimen trees and perennial gardens and offers a guided tree and herb walk with herbalist Stacie Rydingsward? In winter, she’ll come into the (restored) 1912 kitchen and mix salves for your skin from her herb collection.

Stella and Michael Somers, owners of Rock Hall, took nearly two years to restore the mansion to more than its former glory. Stella is an interior designer and daughter of a builder, who knew as much about wiring and plumbing as she did about the lily design wallpaper in the Scrabble room, which mirrors the thousands of lilies planted just outside the windows. She’s also founder and head designer of Byzantia, an Istanbul jewelry firm, and her exotic colors and designs are reflected in this glorious country home.

Michael, a former Manhattan bond trader, is now chief chef of the amazing spread that he calls breakfast, complete with his homemade prepared gravlax, frittata made with local Connecticut eggs and milk, and biscotti to dip into your cappuccino. When we arrived in late October he was preparing candy apples for their look as much as their taste. They added bright red color to an already dazzling great room with a fireplace guarded by two brass deer.

Stay a night or a weekend in this Jazz Age estate and shower in a 100-year-old “ribcage” shower that sprays you from neck to ankles from the sides.
