Ski Okemo Mountain and treat yourself to a warm waffle

LUDLOW, Vt. — With the ability to make snow on 97 percent of its trails and a reputation for the finest grooming this side of the Rockies, Vermont’s Okemo Mountain ( knows how to weather weak winters like last year’s.

Give Okemo a healthy deluge of snow, however, and you feel like you’re carving your turns in butter. The mountain is known for its intermediate terrain, with wide blue cruisers like Timberline and Jolly Green Giant. In the morning, I like to make my way over to the western edge of the ski area to cruise down Off the Rim and Rimrock, which offer excellent vistas of the valley below. Then it’s on to Heaven’s Gate, which never seems crowded, especially after lunch at the waiter-served restaurant, Epic. I end my day on the trails of Jackson Gore: Blue Moon, Lower Limelight, and the aptly named Tuckered Out.
