■  Beware of bargain-priced vacation developments, which in some cases are abandoned ghost estates built during the country’s economic boom that have been rebranded as “holiday cottages.”

■  If you find a property on a rental site, do a Web search for details on the owner. Landlords are often happy to cut out the middle man, and you’ll get a better rate.
