Walk the Rockland, Maine, breakwater

If you want to feel like you’re at the edge of the world, take this enjoyable stroll to the Rockland lighthouse on the longest rock jetty in New England. The walk is a visual feast at sunset when the last rays of the day filter down to the large rock slabs and seals are often resting ashore. To your right Rockland’s schooners are docked. To your left the mountains of Camden Hills State Park stand watch over Maine’s rugged coastline. Jeeps were once permitted on the jetty, resulting in large cracks, so be careful. Walk to the end of the breakwater on the far side of the lighthouse to view the last round of boats and ferries gliding into the harbor. Then make the trip back to your car, which you can park on streets on the perimeter of the Samoset Resort.
