Duquesne Incline in Pittsburgh

VisitPittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — For someone afraid of heights, you might think I would avoid climbing on a century-old wooden cable car and ascending to a height 400 feet above terra firma. Oh, but the Duquesne Incline provides such dramatic views of Pittsburgh that it’s worth conquering your fears. The upper station features a large observation deck offering 180-degree views of the point where the Allegheny, Ohio, and Monongahela rivers meet. After checking out framed photos and stories of Pittsburgh’s history, take the self-guided walking tour (50 cents) to view the mechanics of the incline in operation, including the cable drum and 12-foot wooden gear, part of the original installation from 1877. On Sundays, service begins at 7 a.m. The gift shop — with souvenirs, maps, and photos — opens two hours later.  Adults $2.50 each way, children ages 6-11 $1.25, under 5 free. 412-381-1665, http://www.duquesneincline.org. If you plan it right, you can end your tour by descending to the Grand Concourse at Station Square (occupying the former Pittsburgh and Lake Erie train station) in time for the elaborate 10 o’clock brunch.  Adults $25.99, 4-12 $13.99, under 4 free.
