SOUTH DEERFIELD — Driving south from Greenfield along Route 10, looking for a place to have a quick and tasty bite, we found Cliff’s Smokin’ Backyard Barbeque & Catering. Located in the parking lot of a former farm stand, this small roadside eatery — little more than two smokers, a tent, and two picnic tables — serves succulent meats with large flavors.
It was a hot day on the cusp of autumn, and Kelly Phillips (who owns the business along with her husband, Cliff) was placing briskets on racks of a cylindrical, wood-fired smoker. Phillips didn’t seem to mind the heat, and chatted enthusiastically about the menu that changes daily.
“We use a dry rub. We cook beef brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, turkey legs, chicken wings, and soon will be doing some prime ribs and smoked salmon,” said Phillips. “It’s all wood-fired. We mainly use fruitwoods, like apple and cherry, plus maple and oak.”
She also serves homemade sauces — one spicy, one not — smoked potatoes, cornbread, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, and beans “made from scratch.” The meats are all locally sourced. Phillips plans to operate at this location six days a week “till the snow flies.”
“I’m not out to make a lot of money,” said Phillips. “I’m out to show people my good food.”
