PARIS — Given its Belle Époque buildings and bountiful boulangeries, many regard rue Mouffetard as the quintessence of traditional Paris. Yet its latest resident, a self-serve frozen yogurt cafe called Rosa Kiwi, finds its niche among the Lebanese, Japanese, and Spanish restaurants and the international student population that enliven this cobblestone street in the fifth arrondissement.

Rosa Kiwi, which opened in July, is the first entrepreneurial endeavor of Fayçal Bouhamidi and Victory Orset. “We discovered frozen yogurt during an academic exchange in Mexico,” says Orset. “I was sad to leave the fro-yo stores, so we started our own.”

“We don’t want our customers to grab a fro-yo and be on their way. We want them to sit for a while and enjoy this treat,” adds Bouhamidi.

Sounds from Gainsbourg to Biggie Smalls waft onto the sidewalk. A pink coquette logo winks from the windowpane. Rainbow tiles sprinkle one wall; another displays sketches of mischievous fro-yos by Ellin Jane, a London-based artist. Bethsabée Remus, an employee from Guadeloupe, flashes a smile.

Novelties beyond conventional fare include frozen yogurt crêpes and waffles and raspberry matcha tea maca-rons.

“Everyone is different. There are infinite combinations of people and flavors,” says Bouhamidi. “We want our customers to express themselves through fro-yo.”
