    Ma’alaea Harbor Shops, Ma’alaea

    or 612 Front St., Lahaina

    808-856-8323 or 808-667-7447

A two-hour cruise where the crew collects whale data and the passengers watch the antics of the endangered humpback whales. $37.

    The Hana Highway

For a gorgeous — and scary — drive, take the crazy curvy Hana Highway east from Paia to Hana. It’s got about 60 one-lane bridges and hundreds of switchbacks but dazzling views of mountains and ocean.

    Where to stay

    The Paia Inn

    93 Hana Highway, Paia

Small rooms but great location and beach out back. Standard room with town view $239.

    Where to eat

    Flatbread Company

    89 Hana Highway, Paia

Clay-oven pizzas are perfect, as are the salads, so the lines are long. Go early.

    Pizzas $11.75 to $22.25

    505 Front St., Lahaina

A pricey, pretty place on the beach. Try lunch, $13 to $16.50. Delicious fish and salads.

    What to do

    Lydgate Beach Park

    Off Leho Drive, in Wailua

Two “pools” formed by boulders, the shallower one great for kids, the other for snorkelers.

    Kauai Northshore Limousine & Tours

    PO Box 109, Kilauea

We loved our day with Domi, our indomitable tour guide. Call for prices; we booked through our timeshare and got a deal on a full day that also included an air trip and boat ride.

    South Pacific Dinner Theater

    The Hilton Kauai Beach Resort

    Wednesdays only

Food mediocre but “Some Enchanted Evening,” indeed. Prices start at $86.

    Luau Kalamaku

    Kilohana Plantation

    Kaumualii Highway, Lihue

A huge buffet dinner followed by a theatrical rendition of Hawaii’s early history. Tickets start at about $100.

    Where to eat

    Keoki’s Paradise

    Poipu Beach

Wonderful plate of beef, pork, and crab sliders. But Hula Pie is the real star: $8 for a piece that four of us shared. Next time, I’m getting my own.

    Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant

    5-5016 Kuhio Highway, Hanalei

Not far from our condo, this quickly became our favorite. Snag a riverside seat, eat shrimp tacos and watch the kayakers and standup paddleboarders as they pass by. Not polite to laugh when one falls. Lunch $12 to $18.
