RV rental: Cost and facts

COST BREAKDOWN

Cruise America charges 34 cents for every mile you drive. We drove 251 miles, and stopped for gas twice ($175).

Cruise America’s “generator fee” is $3.50 per hour. (The generator is needed for the electrical outlets, coach air conditioner, and microwave. If you’re hooked up to electricity at your campsite, you won’t get charged.)

The grand total of our RV rental: $1,396.49, including all fees and taxes, for six days, July 2-7.

At Powder Horn, nightly rates range from $30 in the off-season to $74 during summer weekends and holidays. There’s an additional $5 daily fee for every child. For five days and four nights (July 3-7), we paid $380.

RV DRIVING 101

You don’t need a special driver’s license. Cruise America requires renters to be at least 25 and possess a driver’s license and credit card. Operators who are between 21 and 24 can pay a $25 daily fee to drive the RV.

Type “C” motor homes — like the one we rented — are built on an automotive van frame and handle much like a car.

RV rental prices fluctuate based on season, location, and availability. Typically the earlier you book, the lower the price.

BY THE NUMBERS

8.9 million US households own an RV

There are 460 RV rental outlets across the country

The RV rental business is a $350 million annual industry
