So you want to take a trip, but can’t stand that heart-breaking where-are-you-going-without-me face your dog makes when he sees you leaving? We feel you. Here are some of the best pup-friendly spots in New England.

Vermont

A great doggy destination is Burlington, Vt., which boasts, among other pup-friendly spots, an off-leash dog park near Lake Champlain, Starr Farm Dog Park (1 Sunset Cliff, www.burlingtondogpark.org) and on-leash Burlington Bike Bath, which skirts some eight miles by the lake. Plus, Church Street Marketplace, the bustling heart of downtown’s red brick area, is pedestrian-only and lined with boutiques, shops, galleries, and restaurants, including some with pup-friendly outdoor seating. www.churchstmarketplace.com.

Both you and Buddy can lay down and stay at Burlington’s pup-friendly boutique bed and breakfast Made INN Vermont. The restored 1881 Victorian home is now a hip B&B offering bowls, bedding, and treats for both man and his best friend. Bring the kids and both dogs to Field Guide, a rustic barn-chic boutique lodge in Stowe, Vt. with cottages that can sleep up to six humans and two pups. Bring the leash, too — there are miles of nearby hiking trails; each cottage is equipped with an iPad field guide loaded with informative apps about the area, including trails. Rover may not notice it, but you’ll appreciate the inn’s attention to detail — from the smooth river stone fireplace to the tree stump end table. Rhode Island

Treat Lady like royalty at Lord Camden Inn in Camden, Maine, where she’ll get her own bed, food, and water bowls, and homemade biscuits — you’ll get the option of in-room Champagne and massage. Massachusetts
