I think it is important for parents to think about their child's future re: the name. If you spell a common name differently, that name will always be misspelled. If the name is made up, it will be hard to spell and remember by many folks. I have an unusual two word first name, and I gave my children common first names, so when they call someone, the person on the other end of the phone hears the name instead of saying, "Huh, what did you say your name was?" It's a little annoying to have an unusual name. But, I go through life only having to use my first name. I'm the only one they've ever met with that combination. But, odd spellings are really not good for the kids. It's important to remember that the children are not always going to be the little darlings under our control.
