Braintree’s garbage solution

The transfer station off Route 3 produces a hive of sonic activity.

They line up like cars at a drive-through, one in front of the other, waiting their turn to advance. Only in this case, there’s nothing to pick up. They queue to drop something off. And chances are it smells quite a bit worse than fast food. I’m talking about garbage trucks from Braintree, Boston, Quincy, Randolph, and other communities that deliver their loads to the Braintree Transfer Station, a longtime landmark in a shopping district off Route 3. Since 1989, a company called Covanta Energy has operated the transfer station, the site of an old landfill, for the town.
