Ranch housing style makes a comeback

Once ridiculed by buyers, this one-story abode with a Mad Men vibe is finding new fans.

Though it will never be as popular as the ubiquitous Colonial here in New England, the ranch is making a return. The simple home is being embraced by young people attracted to the mid-century modern vibe; by aging boomers who no longer want to deal with stairs; and, as always, by those looking for an affordable home.

I love ranch houses, they are so nice!

I live in an expanded Campanelli ranch. Before my wife and I bought it, we had said "No ranches". The realtor listened to what we said we wanted, and showed us what we asked for. Then she invited us to look at an expanded ranch that was just going on the market. I was resistant at first, but when I saw what the previous owners had done to expand and improve the house, I knew it would be perfect for us. We love how everything is on one level. Maintenance is relatively easy. Everything is within reach. e.g. It's easy to get on the roof. Utility costs are relatively low: Our average electric bill is around $65, and and since we added a pellet stove a few years ago, we only use around 400 gallons of oil per year (that's for both heating and hot water). As we grow older, these will grow in importance.
