Don’t just think white tablecloths. Barbecue, Chinese, burger joints — they sometimes have private rooms, too. Depending on the restaurant, you may want to arrange for an affordable buffet or just have guests order from the dinner menu.

The smallest private room at the Back Bay Champions Sports Bar (Marriott Copley Place, 110 Huntington Avenue, Boston, 617-927-5304, holds up to 20 and charges a $500 food and beverage minimum for a group that size. With a menu of beer, burgers, and other pub fare, you can order up a feast at $25 a head (not including tax and gratuity).
