A couple’s guide to nesting

When both partners have strong opinions about the way a house should look, as they increasingly do, how do you keep the peace and get results you both can live with?

Ben and Angela Cavallo, pictured with their son, Sam, both had a say in the design of the powder room at their Dedham home. But Angela left the decisions about the layout, materials, and appliances in the kitchen to Ben, who loves to cook.

Selecting color schemes, fabrics, and furnishings is Elms’s business, but Brown, who works for a software company, is equally interested in the process. “We’re always tearing pages out of magazines that show things we like and sending each other links online,” says Elms.
