Kale-fennel salad at BoMA

In the South End, a salad with details that count.

Kale and shaved fennel salad at BoMA in Boston's South End.

This is a great winter dish. Pretty, frilly leaves of kale are julienned and mixed with equal parts mesclun greens and shaved fennel. There’s neither too much nor too little dressing, and it doesn’t overpower the greens or the orange segments. Then comes the crunch, and a perfectly good dish transforms into something more — a really great salad. With that handful of spiced and candied almonds, the folks in the kitchen at BoMA have reminded you that they’re really paying attention to you, that they want your food to be great. — Anne V.
