The boys are back

TD Garden erupts when the Bruins find the net.

> To listen, go to bostonglobe.com/soundtrack. It’s a cold, raw night in Boston. Not inside TD Garden, though. The place is sold out, crammed with Bruins fans draped in black and gold. They all want the same thing: They want goals. But they will have to wait. In this game, against the stingy New Jersey Devils, the puck won’t find the net. First period gone, no Bruins goals. Second period, no Bruins goals. Through much of the third period, still no Bruins goals. And then, as the game enters the closing minutes, winger Nathan Horton delivers a crucial score. The Garden erupts with the sounds of celebration: a titanic cheer from the stands, two deep horn blasts, and the pulsing Zombie Nation song “Kernkraft 400.” It’s a cathartic moment, a release for the deprived, a reward for patience and persistence on the ice and off. Bruins backers pump their arms in the air, they dance, they yell. A little while later, Boston will take the game in a shootout. With a victory in hand, and the NHL season back after a four-month lockout, it’s a good night to be a hockey fan.
