Missing Johnnie’s Foodmaster

I shopped at the Somerville store daily and was surprised to realize how much I’d miss the place and its staff.

JOHNNIE’S FOODMASTER MAY HAVE BEEN the soul of my neighborhood, but it was a soul the neighborhood didn’t quite know it had.

Last November, when I heard it was closing, bought out by Whole Foods, I worried only about the loss of convenience. But soon I began feeling the impending loss in more emotional ways. I’d shopped at the Beacon Street Johnnie’s in Somerville near daily for 13 years; in fact, my casual knowledge of the store went back 39 years, my entire adult life. A sense of loss, even abandonment, washed over me the next time I shopped.

If Johnny's Foodmaster is the center of your world you need to move.  Really.

Don't knock Whole foods. If eating the best foods you can afford isn't your priority, what is?

If you are low income or just plain frugal Whole Foods (also known as Whole Paycheck) is no substitute for Johnnie's Foodmaster. Johnnies was well stocked, had friendly staff & was most of all AFFORDABLE. I will miss the customers I saw on a daily basis & most of all their dogs who knew me personally. There is now no local grocery store that has reasonable prices. I found out the difference between Johnnies & Shaws the other day when I purchased a cup of soup only to be charged a ridiculous amount of money for the small bag of oyster crackers that were sitting with the soup choices. The price of the soup was posted, why was there no mention of the cracker prices?
